The following information is about Ovarian Cysts.
Ovarian Cysts Defined
Cysts on the ovaries that usually develop when a follicle has grown large (as one or more do every month during ovulation) but has failed to rupture and release an egg. Ovarian cysts are relatively common, and most are considered functional (noncancerous). These cysts may produce symptoms such as an irregular menstrual cycle, pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen, and unexplained abdominal swelling. Small functional ovarian cysts usually disappear by themselves, but large ovarian cysts may need to be removed before they rupture or hemorrhage. If an ovarian cyst is seriously abnormal (for example, cancerous), it should be removed. Ovarian cysts can be detected in a routine gynecological (GYN) exam.
