Pearl Index Defined

The standard technique for calculating contraceptive efficacy, and quantifying contraceptive failure rates, in clinical tests that take place over a specific period of time (usually one year). The Index number is found by first dividing the number of unintended pregnancies that occur during the test by the time-span of the test (measured in either months or cycles). The resulting number is then multiplied by a factor of either 1200 or 1300. The Pearl Index is the accepted measurement used by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for new contraceptive drugs.
